Hermien's love of nature is certainly the starting point for her work. She draws her inspiration from colours and shapes. She enjoys experimenting with interesting materials like seed cones or leaves with strange shapes. She sees it as a challenge to use everyday material in such a way that it suddenly transpires into something exotic. She takes delight in combining flowers and colours that are traditionally seen as in compatible and to create a new harmony from these combinations.
Hermien believes that flowers can change a space into something special. It creates a certain atmosphere and even the smallest bunch of flowers can heighten the esthetic qualities of your life. Hermien sees every bunch and arrangement as a new challenge. You only need to set foot in her shop to sense the sense of humour in her work.
Flowers in the Foyer opened its doors in Stellenbosch for the first time in February 1997.
After Hermien Coetzee ran the business from her garage for a short period, the need for a shop that was accessible to the public quickly arose. The first shop location, in the foyer of the Dorp Street Gallery, also resulted in the name of the shop: Flowers in the Foyer.
